The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
