Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
